Shares of natural-gas-for-transportation supplier Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ:CLNE) are up 10.2% at 2:47 p.m. EDT on August 9. Today's surge follows a bad day on August 8, when shares finished down 11% following the release of the company's second-quarter financial results after market close.
So whatToday's big jump is interesting, considering that there really isn't any corresponding news that could be the catalyst. The company didn't make any announcement, there are no published Wall Street analyst upgrades of the stock, and there aren't any of the other usual suspects, such as rising oil prices.
If there's a "best guess" reason why shares are moving up today, it's that some investors are seeing the positives that really outweighed any negatives from the company's second-quarter earnings report. Clean Energy ended the quarter with more cash than debt, more improvement in lowered expenses, improved gross margins, and a clear path toward growth, with multiple catalysts set to drive adoption of natural gas in the heavy-trucking industry.

When talk around the water cooler turns to energy investments, it's oil and gas companies that represent the usual suspects. Renewable energy companies like Vestas Wind Systems (NASDAQOTH:VWDRY), First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR), and Ormat Technologies (NYSE:ORA) -- companies whose names are far less recognizable than those like ExxonMobil and Chevron -- may not be on most investors' radars. However, there are certainly reasons to believe that they should be.

It might seem odd that the industry's biggest winner so far this year isn't growing. In fact, Noodles & Co. (NASDAQ:NDLS) recently posted a quarterly net loss while revenue decreased 5%. But that result still shot past investors' expectations by showing surprising progress in the casual-dining chain's recovery efforts. Noodles & Co. has lots of work ahead of it before it can snap out of its four-year stretch of annual net losses. Yet, with shares having fallen by over 80% since 2013, even modestly good news proved to be enough to spark at least a short-term rally in the stock.
