Top Performing Companies To Invest In 2014

The S&P 500 Index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) ended the day and the week on a higher note, logging its third straight week of gains, as the bull market in equities continues. The index added seven points, or 0.4%, to end at 1,633. Still, a few S&P companies managed to disappoint the market, and their shortcomings were reflected in their outsized losses today.

Just a few days after Cognizant Technology Solutions (NASDAQ: CTSH  ) reported earnings that sent shares inthe IT and consulting companyup5%, the stock slipped 5%. To be fair to Cognizant, the stumble may be more due to political happenings than anything it's done wrong. An immigration reform bill in the Senate, considered a potential boon to the technology sector, is very unlikely to make it through the House of Representatives. As Cognizant President Gordon Coburn remarked in the earnings call, this is according to the very Senator who authored the bill.

Oil refiner Tesoro (NYSE: TSO  ) lost 2.9% today, on a day when the oil and gas sector, as a whole, was the worst performing of the 10 major sectors. Tesoro is reeling from a recent shutdown in a Washington state refinery earlier this week after a leak was discovered. Thankfully, the issue has been resolved, but the 125,000-barrel-per-day refinery lost some meaningful business in the process.

Umpqua (UMPQ) is engaged in the business of commercial and retail banking and the delivery of retail brokerage services. This stock closed up 5% at $17.11 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 2.16 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 686,781

    Volume % Change: 235%

From a technical perspective, UMPQ ripped sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $16.51 with strong upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of UMPQ within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if UMPQ manages to take out Monday's intraday high of $17.46 and then once it clears its 52-week high at $17.48 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in UMPQ as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $16.51 or above more near-term support at $16 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 686,781 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then UMPQ will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $20 to $23.

Advisors' Opinion:

Another stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is China Recycling Energy (CREG), which engages in the recycling energy business, providing energy savings and recycling products and services. This stock is off to a strong start in 2013, with shares up a whopping 166%.

If you take a look at the chart for China Recycling Energy, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $1.67 to $1.66 a share. Following that bottom, shares of CREG have started to uptrend strong and move back above its 50-day moving average. That uptrend has now pushed shares of CREG within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in CREG if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.80 to $2.85 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 95,671 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then CREG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $3.50 to $4 a share.

Traders can look to buy CREG off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $2.32 a share, or near more support at $2 a share. One can also buy CREG off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Since then, several other indexes had been less hesitant to add Facebook to their ranks. Russell's indexes were among the first to include Facebook as a constituent, and as various lockup provisions expired to expand the stock's float, Russell responded earlier this year by boosting the social-media giant's weighting in several key indexes. The Nasdaq 100 brought on Facebook as a member a year ago, giving shareholders in PowerShares QQQ (NASDAQ: QQQ  ) the same conundrum that S&P index fund investors face today.

  • [By BENZINGA]

So, for those who pay attention to such things, imagine the excitement coming into Monday's session as the DJIA was flirting with 16,000, the S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) was closing in on 1,800, the NASDAQ (NYSE: QQQ) was flirting with 4,000 (something it hasn't done in at least a decade) and while, considerably less important, the S&P Midcap (NYSE: MDY) was just above 1,300. In short, if a big, round number is important, then four of them must be monumental, right?

If you don't have the time or expertise to carefully select individual stocks to invest in, you'd do well to consider investing in exchange-traded funds (ETFs). They're built like mutual funds, but they trade like stocks, and many charge lower fees than regular mutual funds. That's especially true of ETFs that track indexes. A great example to consider for your portfolio is the PowerShares QQQ ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ  ) .
