Top 10 Mid Cap Stocks To Watch For 2014

Gregory James Van Raalte/Shutterstock The mumbo-jumbo used in the stock market can stop many potential investors in their tracks. So is deciphering the lingo so you make smarter investment decisions. Today, we'll start with three basic terms that define the investment strategy of many mutual funds: large cap, mid cap and small cap. "Cap" is short for capitalization and basically describes the size of the company in terms of its stock market value. Market cap is determined by multiplying the number of shares of stock a company has issued by the stock price. That means a company's market cap can fluctuate, but those daily moves don't usually change its place in these three categories. A Capital Idea Apple (AAPL), Exxon Mobil (XOM) and General Electric (GE) are three of the biggest companies in the world. Apple, the world's largest company, has a market cap of approximately $570 billion. Such giant companies make up the large cap sector. Large caps generally have a market value of more than $10 billion -- maybe $15 billion, by some definitions. That means they tend to be well-established companies with strong financial profiles, and many pay regular dividends.

The mid-cap sector is an often-unloved group in the investment world.

Small cap stocks Attitude Drinks Inc (OTCMKTS: ATTD), Axiologix, Inc (OTCMKTS: AXLX) and Unisource Corporation (OTCMKTS: USRC) have all been getting some attention lately in investment emails or investor alerts thanks in part to paid promotions. And while there is nothing wrong with properly disclosed paid promotions or investor relations activity, such activity can backfire on unwary investors or traders. With that in mind, here is a closer look at all three small cap stocks to help you decide whether they are truly hot or not:

Advisors' Opinion:

The same can't be said of another big loser on the Dow, industrial giant Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) . This stock has been hammered over the course of 2013, and shares are down a further 1.7% today. China's slowdown has crippled Caterpillar's fortunes, and the country's disappointing GDP report showing only 7.7% growth in the first quarter didn't help the company's outlook.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

    Dow losers
Shares of Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) are down 1.8% following the announcement that the company's union members in South Milwaukee rejected a deal that would freeze wages for six years but provide job security. The proposed plan was to cap the number of layoff weeks to 14 per year and reduce or eliminate indefinite layoffs caused by declining sales in mining equipment. The rejection is not something shareholders want to see, because the plan would have allowed Caterpillar to better control costs over the six-year contract period.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Joshi Madhavi]

The company gets its revenues from two types of fees: management fees which are linked to the assets under management (AUM) and performance fees which can be quite volatile. Over the last five years AUM have increased by around 4% per annum from the low at the end of 2008. However, revenues have decreased by around 7% per annum. Performance fees have held up okay since 2008, but management fees have taken a big hit. Since revenues are dependent on the average AUM over the whole year, let look at revenues from 2009 they have grown by around 6.5% per annum in this case. Institutional clients are more sticky and stable compared to retail, but the company has not managed to increase AUM from this source substantially over the last five years.

Buckeye GP LLC serves as the general partner of the company. Buckeye Partners, L.P. was founded in 1886 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Richard Band]

After a disappointing 2012, Buckeye Partners (BPL) seems to be regaining its stride. On October 9, Buckeye announced it had signed a pact to buy 20 petroleum storage terminals, mostly on the East Coast, from Hess Corp. for $850 million. I expect this deal to give a noticeable lift to BPL cash flow in 2014, enabling the partnership to pick up the pace of its quarterly distributions. Current yield: 6.4%. Look for the cash payout to grow 4%% a year over the long run, slightly below the industry average (because Buckeye pipelines mainly transport refined products like gasoline and jet fuel, as opposed to crude oil direct from the fields). Nearly all of BPL debt carries a fixed rate helpful nsurance policyif interest rates go up.

  • [By David Dittman]

Question: If I’m relying on dividends for income, does it make sense to sell some or all shares because the price went up 50 percent, Buckeye Partners LP (NYSE: BPL) for example?

Best Consumer Service Companies To Watch For 2014

2014 might end up being remembered as The Year of the LED.

On New Year's Day, as part of the energy efficiency standards introduced by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the federal government enacted the final phasing out of incandescent lightbulb technology in the U.S.

The technology for these incandescent bulbs was patented more than 130 years ago by inventor Thomas Edison. And while they were a revolution in lighting, they're also known to produce more heat than light. And, according to the EPA, any compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) and many Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) can meet (future government standards set for 2020), shaving energy usage compared to standard incandescents by 75 percent./p>

Top 10 Healthcare Technology Companies For 2015: ADT Corp (ADT)

The ADT Corporation (ADT), incorporated on January 18, 2012, is a provider of electronic security, interactive home and business automation, and monitoring services for residences and small businesses in the United States and Canada. The Company products and services include ADT Pulse interactive home and business solutions, and home health services. Its electronic access control limits unauthorized entry and employee access to the business, as well as complete access. Effective August 2, 2013, The ADT Corp acquired Devcon Security Services Corp, a provider of security protection services, from Devcon International Corp. In November 2013, Kastle Systems International announced that it had acquired Mutual Central Alarm Services and Stat-Land Security Systems from ADT Corporation.

The Company's video surveillance views events in multiple areas of facility, which has control over loss and oversees business. On October 1, 2012, the Company completed the acquisition of Absolute Security.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

Not surprisingly, investors and the financial press immediately began trying to identify Ackman's most likely targets. By Tuesday, two names were getting most of the attention: FedEx and security firm ADT (NYSE: ADT  ) . Both seemed to fit most of the criteria Ackman identified.

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

ADT Corp.'s(ADT) fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 2.1% as the security-monitoring company’s recurring revenue improved thanks to customer growth. The top line beat views, pushing shares up 2.2% to $43.75 premarket.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

On a more somber note, shares of security system provider ADT (NYSE: ADT  ) fell 5.79% today, after the company announced that it will repurchase 10.24 million shares from hedge fund Corvex Management. The agreed-upon amount was Friday's closing price of $44.01 per share. While Corvex currently owns 11.2 million shares of ADT, this is a massive cut to its holding amount and comes despite ADT's reporting of earnings growth in recent quarters as its customer base grows and the housing industry becomes healthier. Corvex founder Keith Mieister will resign from the ADT board now that it will no longer own 5.3% of the outstanding shares. While current shareholders should be happy the company agreed to buy back those shares, it does seem odd that such a large investor would dump nearly its entire holding. And that's probably why investors pushed the price lower today.

  • [By Jim Powell]

As my top pick for the coming year, I like the long-term outlook for ADT Corporation (ADT), a major home security company that was spun-off from Tyco International last year.

One company with seemingly limitless upside potential today was senior housing operator Emeritus (NYSE: ESC  ) , which gained 35.2% after agreeing to be purchased by Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD  ) for $1.4 billion, excluding debt. Under the terms of the deal, Emeritus shareholders will receive 0.95 shares of Brookdale, and would effectively own 23% of the outstanding shares of the company once the merger is complete. Brookdale anticipates the deal being EPS neutral in 2014, and forecasts it adding $0.40 in EPS by the third year. The move certainly makes sense on paper, as cost synergies will help these two senior housing companies fight back against the expectation of declining Medicare reimbursement rates. However, over the long run, the Medicare reimbursement picture is still very cloudy, making Brookdale a riskier buy at the moment following today's announcement.

  • [By John Kell]

Brookdale Senior Living Inc.(BKD) has agreed to merge with Emeritus Corp.(ESC) in a deal that values the operator of long-term, assisted-living facilities at about $1.4 billion, as the companies look to form a national senior-living-solutions company. Emeritus surged 34% to $28.75 premarket.

Hot Net Payout Yield Stocks For 2014

The budget deficit is falling fast. That's great news if you're worried about the nation's debt. But it's less enjoyable if you're concerned about economic growth in the short run.

Between spending cuts and job layoffs, governments (state, local, and federal) have been a net drag on GDP growth in 11 of the last 13 quarters. That isn't a political statement; it's just what the numbers show:

Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis.

A good way to visualize what's going on here is to look at the jobs market. Since the recession ended in June 2009, the split between the private and government sector is night and day. Private companies have been adding to their payrolls at a good clip. Government employment, driven by state and local districts, has been in constant decline:

Why Digital River Inc. Shares Popped Today

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Digital River  (NASDAQ: DRIV  ) are trading 8% higher in the afternoon after rocketing to an opening-bell gain of over 11% on Wednesday morning. Investors have cheered Digital River's strong first-quarter earnings and are reacting favorably to respectable (though not strong) guidance issued for the remainder of the fiscal year.

So what: Digital River's first-quarter revenue fell 12% year over year to $97.8 million, but this reduced figure nevertheless cleared Wall Street's low expectations for $93.6 million in revenue. The company's earnings of $0.20 per share stomped on analyst expectations of a more modest $0.10 in EPS.

Digital River now expects to generate between $84 million and $87 million in revenue, and anticipates recording a loss of anywhere from $0.07 to $0.03 per share, for the second quarter. Analysts had expected $83.6 million in revenue, but had hoped Digital River would reach breakeven on the bottom line for the second quarter. Digital River also issued full-year guidance, which anticipates revenue in the range of $377 million to $382 million with an EPS range of $0.41 to $0.51. Analysts had sought $371.2 million in full-year revenue and $0.42 in full-year EPS, so the annual projection came in ahead on both counts.

Now what: This isn't really as good a report as it may seem on the surface. Digital River recorded $394.7 million in revenue for its 2013 fiscal year, so even the high end of its full-year guidance would result in a 3% year-over-year decline on the top line. The company's earnings per share, which have dawdled in negative territory of late as the result of one-time charges, were last positive toward the end of 2012, as Digital River recorded $0.42 in trailing 12-month EPS during the third quarter of that year. There might be some opportunity here, but it's buried under a thick layer of bad history. You'll have to dig pretty deep to uncover a hidden gem, and you're still far more likely to wind up with a pile of dirt.

Hot Rising Stocks To Invest In Right Now

U.S. stocks are little changed his morning as the Federal Open Market Committee's June policy meeting gets under way. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) and the narrower, price-weighted Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) are up 0.29% and 0.42%, respectively, at 10:15 a.m. EDT.

The macro view: Inflation Tuesday
And speaking of Fed policy, Consumer Price Index data for the month of May was released this morning. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers -- the most popular measure of inflation -- rose by 0.1% last month on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Stripping out food and energy, the core inflation index rose 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising just 0.1% during each of the prior two months. Year on year, the core index is up 1.7% (unadjusted) -- close to the Fed's 2% inflation target. These results help dispel the fear of disinflation or deflation, thereby diminishing one obstacle to the "tapering" of the Fed's bond-buying program. Of course, we should know more about which way the Fed is leaning on this issue following the conclusion of the FOMC meeting tomorrow.

Any money left after paying for the tender offer goes "to repay certain other debt, to fund capital expenditures and for general corporate purposes."
