Top 5 Blue Chip Companies To Buy Right Now

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is a gold mine for long-term investors. It's particularly juicy if you're looking for high-quality income stocks, as these proven blue chips tend to deliver both high yields and reliable dividend growth. But there are stragglers in every herd, including this elite collection. Let me point out the three worst dividend stocks on the Dow today.

AA Dividend data by YCharts.

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) is a horrible income stock right now, any way you slice it. No other Dow stock even comes close to its feeble 0.3% yield. Annual payouts have plunged 97% over the last decade, and regulators keep a heavy foot on B of A's throat to prevent the troubled bank from over-stretching its financial reserves. That financial crisis in 2008 wrought devastation on Bank of America's dividend appeal.

    Don't fear Apple
Even Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) is getting into cloud-based productivity software, recently announcing iWork for iCloud at WWDC this week. During the demonstration, Apple kept pointing out that everything was taking place in a browser. The Mac maker made sure to point out that the new offering, which will launch in beta this fall, will support all of Office's common formats.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Morgan Housel]

For most of the last decade, investors scooped up stocks that had big international exposure with the idea that they would provide a hedge against a weakening dollar. Companies that do most of their business overseas, like Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) (73% overseas), Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) (all overseas), and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) (85% overseas), looked compelling as a hedge against the U.S. economy's faults.

In addition, it offers value-added services, including risk management, issuer processing, loyalty, dispute management, value-added information, and CyberSource-branded services. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lawrence Meyers]

Visa (V) is a stock to buy now because its one part of a duopoly.

Say all you want about Discover Financial (DFS) and American Express (AXP), but MasterCard (MA) and Visa own the vast majority of the credit card world and always will. Discover came along years ago and hasn done much to penetrate the outer walls of its competitors. And we always want to own companies that dominate their space.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

It been a good week for Visa(V) andMasterCard(MA)wo days in and theye enjoyed two rounds of upgrades.

Today, the bullishness comes from Janney Montgomery Scott Thomas McCrohan and Leonard DeProspo, who boosted their ratings on both names to Buy.

For Visa, the upgrade came with a target price increase from $210 to $240 and they write that the recent selloff in the name provides an attractive entry point o own one of the better business models in payments. They count the company powerful network, worldwide brand, and its role in influencing payment standards among its core strengths, and note that the increase of mobile payments has also served to increase the number of places where Visa is accepted.

They write that strong margin expansion in the past year and a half means that mid-to-high teens earnings per share growth is possible even if margins contract this quarter and next, as the company guidance suggests.

    More thoughts below:

Changes to FANF fees beginning April 1, 2015. Last week, Visa modified its FANF pricing (Fixed Acquirer Network Fee) to include a 15 bps volume-based charge for sub-merchants of payment aggregators. Previously, payment aggregators only paid one lump sum payment of $40,000 per month, which created a cost advantage for aggregators versus traditional acquirers and ISOs that were required to pay a separate FANF fee per merchant location. The new FANF pricing is 15 bps of monthly volume, which translates into $30 million of incremental high-margin fee income for Visa based on $20 billion of aggregator volume.

Fiscal 2014 EPS guidance achievable. First quarter margins of 65.8% were a record, and were 230 bps above the previous record (FQ1-2012). FY 2014 EPS guidance calls for mid-to-high teen growth but assumes higher operating expense in 2Q and 3Q and ongoing F/X headwinds from current turmoil in emerging markets. Mid-to-high teen EPS growth appears reasonable gi

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Trustamind]

Warren Buffett surprised everyone when he announced that Berkshire (BRK.A) (BRK.B) bought 5.5% shares of IBM (IBM) last November. No matter how bizarre it looks, there was sound logic behind Buffett decision, as he explained in his interview with CNN.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) , though, fell 0.6%, which made it the biggest loser in the Dow on a percentage basis. As numerous Fool contributors have noted earlier today, Oracle scored a big win in its challenge to IBM's strategy of dominating the Big Data market, when a study showed that Oracle's technology performed better than IBM's. As troubling as that is for Big Blue, it ordinarily wouldn't have a big impact on the broader stock market. But because IBM's share price is so high, it has a disproportionately heavy weighting in the price-weighted Dow. As a result, if IBM can't resolve its problems, a stock decline could make it very hard for the Dow to advance overall.

yen or USD 10.5 trillion), having risen JPY 32.4 trillion (USD 338 billion) from the same date a year earlier.  This was the first time ever government debt has topped the JYP 1000 trillion market.  It constitutes for every Japanese citizen alive on July 1 a debt of JPY 7.9 million (USD 82,000).

During the three years of center-left Japan Democratic Party (DPJ)-led government that ended last December fiscal policy operated under a self-imposed ceiling of JPY 71 trillion ($740 billion) regular budget expenditures and a cap of JPY 44 trillion ($450 billion) in new government bond issues.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Don't fight history
Sometimes we just have to remember as investors that there isn't room enough for every company to succeed. Thus enters dELiA*s (NASDAQ: DLIA  ) , an online and mail catalog retailer that markets apparel to teenage girls and young women.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

Top 10 Japanese Companies To Buy For 2014: Radian Group Inc.(RDN)

Radian Group Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates as a credit enhancement company in the United States. The company offers credit-related insurance coverage, primarily through private mortgage insurance, and risk management services to mortgage lending institutions. Its private mortgage insurance protects the holders of the company?s insurance from default-related losses on residential mortgage loans made generally to home buyers, as well as facilitates the sale of these mortgage loans in the secondary mortgage market. The company primarily serves mortgage originators, such as mortgage bankers, mortgage brokers, commercial banks, savings institutions, credit unions, and community banks. Radian Group Inc. was founded in 1977 and is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    The Paulson story
John Paulson made his name by making investments that gained in value when subprime mortgages crashed in the lead-up to the financial crisis. Even now, Paulson is keeping a close eye on housing, but lately, he's been playing the space from the other direction with bullish bets on mortgage insurance companies MGIC Investment (NYSE: MTG  ) and Radian Group (NYSE: RDN  ) . His argument is basically that as long as the housing market has hit bottom, prospects for further losses are minimal, allowing mortgage insurers to make up for past losses.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Genworth's results are consistent with the gains that its mortgage-insurance peers have experienced. Both Radian Group (NYSE: RDN  ) and MGIC Investment (NYSE: MTG  ) have posted impressive gains that have attracted the attention of hedge-fund investors seeking to capitalize on the strengthening housing market. Yet in the long run, the question that faces the entire industry is whether lenders will even want to make mortgage loans with inadequate down payments that require mortgage insurance in the first place. Some would argue that tighter lending standards would make mortgage insurance unnecessary, while others note that lenders might choose to demand insurance beyond the current standards of roughly 20% to 25% home equity that have historically triggered the contractual need for purchase-money insurance in mortgage contracts.

  • [By Markos Kaminis]

I come to the real unemployment rate and the real underemployment rate (U-6 figure) by switching this month's labor force participation rate with the rate that existed in the healthier economy of November 2006. Some would argue that participation level was inflated by the real estate bubble, with a good many Americans lucky to be working in mortgage finance at Bank of America's (BAC) Countrywide Financial, or in construction or housing sales at Toll Brothers, and other ancillary jobs tied to housing like in mortgage insurance at Radian Group (RDN). While I give that argument some credence, I also suggest that given the humming economy of the time on various drivers, those Americans could also have found other work or founded businesses.

Analyst Jiang, on the other hand, is seeing good pace in gas storage, exiting the summer at about 0.05 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), which is 0.8 Tcf below the normal and is on track to match the lowest winter exit for storage inventories since 2004.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

There's no denying that LDK Solar Co., Ltd (NYSE:LDK) has been a notable laggard this year compared to performances from First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) and Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL). RSOL is up nearly 180% year-to-date, with a decent chunk of that gain unfurling in just the last couple of months. FSLR is up 25% for the year so far, though that more modest gain would have been much bigger had it not been for February's 24% plunge. Meanwhile, LDK shares are down 22% year-to-date, and have barely even blipped despite the fact that solar energy has become all the rage again in recent months.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Last Thursday when I suggested American Community (OTCMKTS:ACYD) was a stock that should be shed immediately, and replaced with a position in Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL), I didn't win a lot of friends. After all, ACYD was the market's newest darling, in the middle of a red-hot runup, while RSOL was "just another solar name" that happened to be lucky enough to stumble its way above a key support line. Well, I hate to be the one to day I told you so, but, I told you so. American Community shares are down 35% since then, while Real Goods Solar shares are up 36% in the meantime. Both stocks seem pretty well entrenched in their current trends too.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

My enthusiasm regarding Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL) and Westinghouse Solar Inc. (OTCMKTS:WEST) hasn't exactly been a veiled secret. Though I've favored one over the other at various times since the entire solar panel industry went back into high gear in the middle of the second quarter, I've been a fan of both RSOL as well as WEST for a while. The trick has been finding the right entry spot for both of these volatile stocks.

Best Computer Hardware Stocks To Own For 2014

Pressure is increasing on General Motors to tell owners of 2.5 million recently recalled U.S. vehicles that they are unsafe and should be parked immediately.

Texas personal injury lawyer Robert Hilliard, suing GM over the recall, plans to ask a federal judge on Friday to order GM to tell owners emphatically that the recalled cars should not be driven until their ignition switches are replaced under the recall.

That dramatic and extraordinary move could leave GM scrambling to find 2.5 million temporary vehicles for the owners to drive.

And U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., emailed constituents Thursday asking them to sign a petition demanding that GM get the cars off the road. The email included a video of Blumenthal and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., emphasizing the dangers and telling GM to act forcefully and promptly.

Logitech (NASDAQ: LOGI  ) is now on the hunt for a chief financial officer following the departure of Erik Bardman, who has joined the privately owned Roku to serve in the same position. Logitech said it is now searching for either an internal or external candidate to replace him after he formally leaves the company at the end of this month.

You can be a video gamer, a PC user, or even a home entertainment watcher without using one of Logitech (NASDAQ: LOGI) products.

The company develops and markets hardware and software products that enable or enhance digital navigation, music and video entertainment, gaming, social networking, and audio and video communication over the Internet.

The company stock has risen by 16 percent so far this year. In January, Logitech announced etter than expectedsales of $628 million for the third quarter, up 2 percent on a year-over-year basis. Cash flow was way up, and earnings per share of $0.30 was up compared to a loss one year earlier.

The retail numbers tell the real story, with the company combined retail growth categories up 62 percent, year-over-year. Tablet peripheral salaries were up 95 percent; audio wearables and wireless sales were up 79 percent; and video gaming sales rose by 25 percent in the same time period.

Those are numbers that are manna from heaven for a company that really needed them, after a 30-month period of mediocre performance from 2010-to-mid-2013 that saw LOGU share price fall stagnate in the $8-$10-per-share range.

ee pleased by our solid Q3 performance, with both sales and profit growth, notes Bracken P. Darrell, Logitech chief executive officer. ee encouraged by the robust sales in our growth categories, as well as the success of our ongoing initiatives to improve profitability.”

e still have more work ahead, but our turnaround is on track as we continue to build a faster and more profitable Logitech,he adds.

Going forward, Logitech has upped its yearly outlook, calling for sales of $2.1 billion, up from $2 billion in its last outlook. Non-GAAP operating income should rise to $125 million, up from $100 million previously.

Why the continued optimism over Logitech, after two-and-half years of tepid performance?

What little the world knows about Apple's concrete plans comes mostly from Apple and its hardware partners. Apple released schematics for what third-party iOS controllers should look like (which also revealed that OS X might get in on the fun). Companies such as Logitech (LOGI), ClamCase and Moga followed suit, and they have been teasing their upcoming products since September. And updates to a handful of existing iOS games have included bits about supporting "Made for iPhone" controllers in their release logs.

Emulex (ELX) is a provider of a range of network convergence solutions that intelligently connect servers, storage and networks within the data center. This stock closed up 1.6% to $8.14 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $8.05-$8.22

    52-Week Range: $5.72-$8.99

    Thursday's Volume: 727,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 786,981

From a technical perspective, ELX bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $7.95 with decent upside volume. This stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between 7.50 on the downside and $8.46 on the upside. This modest spike is now starting to push shares of ELX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if ELX manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.34 to $8.46 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ELX as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $7.95 or $7.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 786,981 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ELX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $8.99. Any high-volume move above $8.99 will then give ELX a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10 to $11.19.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

Alamy Late last month, Chinese hardware giant Lenovo (LNVGY) was the subject of many headlines -- not all of them complimentary -- when it signed a high-profile deal to buy the Motorola Mobility smartphone unit from Google (GOOG). The Asian firm is ponying up a cool $2.9 billion to acquire the business, which is monstrously unprofitable to the tune of a $645 million operating loss in the first nine months of 2013. The market didn't appreciate this. Disturbed by the idea of gallons of red ink spilling from Motorola Mobility onto Lenovo's results, investors traded down the firm's stock by as much as 14 percent after the deal was made public. This might have been compounded by the firm's previous announcement, made only days earlier, that it was spending $2.3 billion to purchase IBM's (IBM) x86 -- read: lower-end -- line of servers. Was such a sell-off, in reaction to either or both, justified? At Home Abroad Lenovo is one of those companies that likes to expand by acquisition. Few Westerners had ever heard of the IT manufacturer in 2005 when it closed its first big buy -- the personal computing division of IBM, for total consideration of around $1.75 billion. The purchase seemed a counterintuitive move when everyone knew that a future stuffed with wireless Internet and portable computing was just around the corner. But guess what? Lenovo not only sold plenty of notebooks and desktops, it managed to grow into the top PC manufacturer in the world. According to figures from Gartner (IT), in Q4 2013 the company was the clear market leader in terms of PC vendor unit shipments. It moved nearly 15 million PCs during the quarter, a figure 6.6 percent higher than in the same period the previous year. This was particularly impressive considering that total shipments for the industry dropped by almost 7 percent over that time frame. Lenovo was able to do this because, for most of its life, it's made big strides in less affluent markets and is continuing to do so. In

In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they're in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn't much different than the real thing. Banking and managing money isn't what it used to be. The 1970s and 1980s brought us the rise of the ATM. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking. That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. While the banks nonperforming assets are a little above average at 3.87% of total assets, HTBI has plenty of excess capital. The equity-to-assets ratio is more than 20 as of the end of the third quarter, and HTBI has been using its capital to buy back HTBI shares below book value.

Top 5 Mid Cap Companies To Invest In 2014: Photronics Inc.(PLAB)

Photronics, Inc. engages in the manufacture and sale of photomasks primarily in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Photomasks are high precision photographic quartz plates containing microscopic images of electronic circuits, which are used in the manufacture of semiconductors and flat panel displays; and used as masters to transfer circuit patterns onto semiconductor wafers and flat panel substrates during the fabrication of integrated circuits, various flat panel displays, and other types of electrical and optical components. The company sells its photomasks to semiconductor designers, manufacturers, foundries, and other high performance electronics manufacturers through its sales personnel and customer service representatives. Photronics, Inc. was founded in 1969 and is headquartered in Brookfield, Connecticut.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

My first earnings short-squeeze trade idea is photomasks maker Photronics (PLAB), which is set to release numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Photronics to report revenue of $106.05 million on earnings of 8 cents per share.

About a month ago, Needham downgraded shares of Photronics to hold from buy following the company's negative preannouncement. Needham anticipates that Photronics will face some near-term challenges and may not generate EPS over 80 cents per share until fiscal year 2015.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float Photronics is pretty high at 11.9%. That means that out of the 59.69 million shares in the tradable float, 7.38 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a high short interest on a stock with a relatively low float. Any bullish earnings news could easily spark a large short-squeeze for shares of PLAB post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, PLAB is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending over the last three months and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $7.03 to its recent high of $8.89 a share. During that uptrend, shares of PLAB have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of PLAB within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade post-earnings.

If you're bullish on PLAB, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.74 to its 52-week high at $8.89 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 212,683 shares. If that breakout hits, then PLAB will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move a
