Hot Growth Companies To Buy For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- TheStreet's Debra Borchardt spoke to Francis Gaskins, director of research at Equities.com, about yet another company planning an initial public offering, ClubCorp.

ClubCorp plans to trade under the ticker "MYCC" and is looking to raise $306 million, with shares priced between $16 and $18, Gaskins said. ClubCorp does not have adequate cash flow to be considered a REIT, and top-line sales are only increasing because of price hikes.

He added that if a company coming to the market doesn't have growth or profits, then it's not very interesting. ClubCorp plans to use the proceeds to pay down debt. Borchardt noted that it does have a lot of assets.

While increased share repurchases should help EPS growth, fixing the fundamentals of the business will require more extensive efforts.

Wedbush’s Corinna Freedman explains how Blackstone’s involvement helps Crocs find a McCarvel’s replacement:

3 Companies That Should Follow Amazon's Lead with Echo

Amazon's (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) latest device, Echo, is in a class of its own. At its core, Echo is a bluetooth speaker, but one that offers impressive functionality. Equipped with seven microphones and a WiFi connection, Echo serves as a digital personal assistant, able to take voice commands and respond intelligently.

Source: Amazon.

Echo's announcement was unexpected, and given that it has yet to receive a full release, its success is largely unproven. Moreover, the reviews it has received have been rather lukewarm -- though for a first generation product, that's not particularly unusual. Still, the category appears to hold promise, and its one that Amazon's major mobile competitors -- Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) (NASDAQ: GOOGL  ) , Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) , and Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) -- would do well to follow.

Siri is limited to iOS devices
Amazon's Echo is powered by the e-commerce giant's new digital personal assistant, Alexa. Like other personal assistants, Alexa can respond to queries, set reminders, and play select songs from a linked Amazon music account.

Apple's Siri offers all this and more but is currently restricted to the iPhone and iPad -- if those devices are out of reach, Siri is largely useless. Alexa, on the other hand, can be accessed from anywhere in the room with Echo's always-on microphones.

If the latest version of Apple's iOS is any indication, the Cupertino tech giant has an interest in offering something similar to Amazon's Echo. iOS 8 includes a new feature -- "Hey, Siri" -- that makes it possible to query Siri from a distance, completely hands-free. Still, it suffers from significant limitations: the device must be plugged in, and the microphones built into the iPhone and iPad, while solid, don't compare to the seven offered by Echo.

An Apple-made Echo alternative could significantly improve Siri's utility by making it far more accessible.

Google Now would be a perfect fit
Google's personal assistant, Google Now, is a little less restricted than Apple's Siri -- available as a mobile app, Google Now is accessible to owners of both Android and iOS devices. A few of these, including the recently released Nexus 6 and Motorola's first and second-generation Moto X, even offer hands-free accessibility.

But no handset quite compares to Echo, and like Siri, Google Now could be improved with dedicated hardware.

Of the three -- Alexa, Siri, Google Now -- the search giant's solution is probably the most powerful, able to interface directly with Google's many online services and offer personalized information on a predictive basis. Google Now can, for example, tip off workers to delays affecting their daily commutes -- assuming they have the foresight to check the app on their phone. A Google Now-connected speaker offering a helpful, verbal warning could prove immensely more useful for similar applications.

Cortana and the Xbox One
Microsoft also offers a version of Amazon's Echo ... sort of. Its video game console, the Xbox One -- when paired with Kinect 2.0 -- is capable of receiving voice commands. It can even search the Internet using Bing or start a playlist through Xbox Music. But Kinect is focused on entertainment rather than utility and exists as more of an alternative control scheme for the Xbox One, rather than an interface for a digital assistant.

Microsoft does have a digital assistant, though, one that it appears increasingly interested in. Cortana (named after a character from Microsoft's Halo franchise) is the Windows Phone equivalent of Siri. Given Windows Phone's extremely limited market share, Cortana hasn't enjoyed widespread adoption -- but that could be about to change.

Windows 10, the next version of Microsoft's operating system, will boast Cortana as a central feature. So long as Windows remains the dominant desktop operating system, Cortana should see increased usage. Away from a Windows PC, however, Microsoft's personal assistant will be largely inaccessible to a group of users that, more than likely, don't have a Windows Phone. A Microsoft-made, Echo-like device, could bridge the gap.

An important new hardware category?
The various digital personal assistants serve to bind users to their respective apps and ecosystems: Siri, with its ability to access iTunes music, encourages the use of Apple's digital music store; Google Now's predictive features work only when paired with its browser, Chrome, and its calendar app, Google Calendar.

Dedicated hardware like Echo could entice users to rely on these assistants to a greater extent and thereby tie themselves further to each company's respective ecosystem. At first glance, Amazon's Echo may appear to be a quirky, niche device, but it could eventually represent an important new hardware category.

Apple Watch revealed: The real winner is inside
Apple recently revealed the product of its secret-development "dream team" -- Apple Watch. The secret is out, and some early viewers are claiming its everyday impact could trump the iPod, iPhone, and the iPad. In fact, ABI Research predicts 485 million of this type of device will be sold per year. But one small company makes Apple's gadget possible. And its stock price has nearly unlimited room to run for early in-the-know investors. To be one of them, and see where the real money is to be made, just click here!

"So long as income growth remains low and credit remains tight, progress in the market for new homes will continue slowly," they said.

The Census Bureau reported sales reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 433,000 and March's results were revised up to 407,000. The previous March estimate was 384,000.

Therefore, risk and earnings growth rates will represent counteracting forces affecting starting or current valuation (PEs). This partially explains why a 3% grower (less risky to achieve) might command the same current valuation PE of, for example, an 11% or 12% grower (riskier and harder to achieve). But this is a critical point; the faster grower will generate a higher future return than the slower grower, ceteris paribas.

For example, his Special Opportunity Fund (SPE) needed more capital to effectively implement its activist strategy after he took over. Unfortunately, most of the ways to raise capital are expensive and seriously dilute shareholder value. For example, a common stock offering, the most common way a closed end fund would raise capital, has to be priced at a discount and an investment bank needs to be paid to organize and sell it. Obviously, paying to issue shares at a discount is a disaster for long term shareholder value, so he instead pursued a rights offering for convertible preferred stock, which allowed the company to raise money without the expense of an investment bank while allowing shareholders the opportunity to increase their holdings in the fund without paying a commission. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Many American oil and gas investors are probably familiar with the major large and small cap players in the Bakken formation in North Dakota and Montana, but few American investors are probably familiar withthe active players further to the north in theoil and gas rich Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Albertawith small cap stocks like Alexander Energy Ltd (CVE: ALX), Renegade Petroleum Ltd (CVE: RPL) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) along with large cap Suncor Energy Inc (NYSE: SU) being among thosepumping out their share of noteworthy news lately. I should point out thatCanada oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the controversialoil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation actually stretches into) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also containing substantial production and reserves. Moreover and excluding the oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%.

Top 5 Telecom Companies To Buy For 2014

AT&T (T) got crushed with its largest one-day loss since the recession after reporting Q1 earnings on Wednesday. The company's weak earnings were a result of soft revenue caused by disappointing subscriber adds. While these two factors caught the headlines, I am much more concerned with its CAPEX guidance and its impact on telecom equipment makers.

A Look Back at CAPEX and its Impact

Last November, telecom equipment makers Ericsson (ERIC) and Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), among many others, traded higher as AT&T provided a boost to the space. On that day, AT&T announced earnings where it hiked its dividend, but also announced that it would spend $22 billion on CAPEX for each of the next three years.

Just in case you don't know, "CAPEX" is capital expenditures that create future benefits, and it is the bulk of business for the telecom equipment companies that build networks. When AT&T announced that it would spend $22 billion in three years, all companies in the telecom equipment space jumped, as $22 billion is more than the $19-$20 billion that had been spent in previous years.

Oi (OIBR), through its subsidiaries, provides integrated telecommunication services for residential customers, companies and governmental agencies in Brazil. This stock closed up 8.6 % to $1.89 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $1.73-$1.91

    52-Week Range: $1.44-$4.69

    Thursday's Volume: 5.48 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 3.91 million

From a technical perspective, OIBR bounced sharply higher here back above its 50-day moving average of $1.83 with heavy upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of OIBR within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if OIBR manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.94 to $2.29 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OIBR as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.83 or above more key near-term support at $1.72 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 3.91 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then OIBR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.44 to its 200-day at $3.06.

Top 5 Valued Stocks To Own Right Now

Fiat's stock soared 16.4% to close at $9.54 per share in trading Thursday, one day after the Italian automaker announced it reached a deal to buy all of the remaining shares of Chrysler owned by UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust.

That is the highest price that Fiat has traded at since at least July 2011. Fiat's stock is traded on the Milan Stock Exchange.

The rally comes a day after Fiat announced a deal to acquire the 41.5% of Chrysler it does not yet own in a deal valued at $4.35 billion. The deal ends a bitter feud between Fiat and the UAW Trust, which manages healthcare for 117,000 Chrysler retirees, over the value of Chrysler stock. It also dramatically speeds up the ability of Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchonne to fully merge the two global automakers.

Max Warburton, an analyst for BernsteinResearch, praised the agreement for its creativity and said it the way it is structured will benefit Fiat because Chrysler is funding more than half of the deal.

As a convenience store, it doesn’t have direct competition fromDollar Tree (DLTR) or Family Dollar (FDO) because these dollar stores aren exclusively focused on food (and they have no gasoline or cigarette sales), and theye targeted at the folks who are trying to save money over convenience, not vice versa. The convenience angle is another reason whyWalmart (WMT) and Costco (COST)aren’t competitors, since those behemoths are about a total shopping experience.

The dirt kept sliding out from under Caterpillar (CAT) during 2013. Will it hit bottom in 2014?

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

UBS analyst Steven Fisher and team think it can. He writes:

2013 was a disappointing year for [Caterpillar] across its businesses (ex-LATAM construction). The mining business, in particular, drove several guidance reductions. We expect[Caterpillar] EPS to find a bottom and potentially turn positive over the next 12-24 months as global growth improves, led by North America. We also expect cost reductions and buybacks to be tailwinds…

Still, Fisher urges investors to be cautious with Caterpillar right now. He writes:

Our mind set is that it may be beneficial to be early in order to get ahead of the improvement in earnings, after the stock was a laggard in 2013. However, we think there is some risk that [Caterpillar] guides below the Street with the Q4 report, and some of the[Caterpillar] indicators we assess suggest caution near term. Specifically, UBS expects oil prices to be weaker in 1H14, we expect[Caterpillar] revenues and earnings to decline YOY in Q4 and Q1, and UBS expects the Yen to weaken vs. the US Dollar; all drivers of[Caterpillar] stock performance. Also, we don’t see major near term catalysts in mining and power.

Given Fisher’s mixed message, it shouldn’t come s a surprise that Caterpillar is little changed today at $90.52, even as Terex (TEX) has fallen 0.8% to $41.03 and Joy Global (JOY) has dropped 1.1% to $55.19. Deere has (DE) gained 0.4% to $90.10.

    Durability
Despite the news this morning that orders for durable-goods increased 4.2% in June, Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) is down 2% following a truly disappointing earnings report. The company has seen continued declines in revenue compared to the prior year, so a new trend of higher demand for durable goods should have been a sign to investors that Caterpillar could see some new buyer activity here in the States. But low commodities prices and signals from China hinting at slowed manufacturing aren't helping the company gain confidence in the market.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) rose 0.88% after the release of the strong homebuilder confidence and industrial production numbers, the latter of which takes into account not only output from U.S. factories but also from mines and utility companies. And since Caterpillar is a big player in the mining equipment field, investors surely saw this report as good news for the company.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) may still be on investors' bad side: Shares have fallen 0.9% today, even though the Department of Commerce reported a 3.3% increase in orders for manufactured goods. Although today's report indicates the U.S. economy is growing stronger, yesterday's Chinese industrial-purchasing numbers were weak, and in order for Caterpillar grow, the company needs a number of major markets to be healthy. Investors already have low expectations for Europe, but now that China is weakening, projections for Caterpillar's revenue and profit may soon decline

We think KMB will be perceived as the safest of the multinationals. Its sales outside the US are about 55% of total; this compares to 65%-70% for Procter & Gamble (PG) and Coty (COTY) and 80%-90% for Colgate (CL), Avon and Tupperware (TUP). In general, its risk to the most volatile currencies is below average (its exposure to Eastern Europe is less than 2% of sales), though it is still translating results in Venezuela (about 3% of sales and profit) at the official rate of 6.3 VEF/$ (the parallel rate just hit 175 VEF/$) and Argentina (also 3% of sales) may devalue again. The cost of important raw materials has started to weaken; as they follow oil decline they could boost gross margins in 2H15. Schemes to defraud the taxman likely sprang to life the second the first penny was collected. But who could have imagined that billions would be paid out every year to those brazen enough to ask the government for refunds they didn’t deserve?

Last year, the IRS mailed out fraudulent refunds worth $3.6 billion. That was at least an improvement over the $5.2 billion doled out in 2012.

Still, it’s hard to fathom how a system could miss the half-million dollars to an address in Bulgaria that was used on 700 income tax returns.

For its part, the IRS said it spotted more than 12 million suspicious returns seeking a total of $40 million. So maybe the batting average isn’t so bad.

Looking at a list of the top tax fraud cases for 2013, it’s not surprising to see that identity theft is a part of many of them. That crime topped the IRS’ 2013 list of top tax scams.

Of course, identity theft isn’t the only way fraudsters try to outfox the government. Last year, even a former big-city mayor was nailed for simply failing to pay all of his taxes.

Currently, three main companies supply security equipment to the TSA - Safran (SAFRY.PK), Smiths (SMGKF.PK), and Level-3 Holdings (LLL). All three of these companies sell the whole range of their products to the TSA, with an ETD offering included. Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

It's tragic that it took a tragedy like last year's shooting at a Newton, Connecticut elementary school to get the ball rolling. Nevertheless, that ball is rolling now, and it's putting companies like L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:LLL), View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM), and American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) in the spotlight. How so? Because VSYM, ASEI, and LLL make the tools that are, unfortunately, going to be the only way to absolutely ensure this nation's public schools are secure, and defended from gunmen like Newton's Adam Lanza.

Our favorite yield plays include [Seadrill, Seadrill Partners, and North Atlantic Drilling.] Meanwhile, we would stick to premium asset exposure ([Atwood Oceanics (ATW), Ensco (ESV), Pacific Drilling (PACD]) over lower- end fleets ([Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO), Noble (NE), Transocean (RIG)]).

Microsoft's Next Surface May Be Closer Than You Think

So far, Microsoft's  (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Surface hasn't been a game-changer by any means, although units did hold up nicely coming out of the holiday quarter. The software giant won't officially disclose unit volumes, but IDC estimates that the company shipped 900,000 units in each of the past two quarters.

DIGITIMES is out today with some supply chain rumblings, speculating that Microsoft is preparing to launch second-generation models at its Build Developer Conference that takes place in San Francisco from June 26 to June 28. The company could be trying to steal the spotlight from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , whose own Worldwide Developers Conference will occur on June 10 to June 14 at the same venue.

Both companies like to use developer conferences to unveil new product offerings. Apple will undoubtedly show off its new software versions, and may also likely have some hardware announcements in the form of MacBook refreshes. On the tablet front, iPads probably won't be unveiled at WWDC. Surface was revealed at a separate event last June, but the RT model would launch several months later in October alongside Windows 8.

The Taiwanese publication says that suppliers have shipped components for between 1 million and 1.5 million Surface Pro models this year, which is the full-featured variant sporting an Intel processor. DIGITIMES estimates that so far Microsoft has sold a total of 1.5 million Surface units, which includes 1 million Surface RT and 500,000 Surface Pro models.

That's relatively close to the 1.8 million total from IDC's estimates, but well short of the 3 million to 4 million that Microsoft had been targeting. Late last year, The Wall Street Journal said the software giant was targeting 3 million to 5 million. Due to this lackluster performance relative to internal forecasts, Microsoft is reportedly proceeding with a "cautious attitude" for the second-generation models.

The company is keeping most of the same suppliers, and may be looking to reduce the size of the display to 7 inches to 9 inches, which would be down from the current 10.6-inch display found on both Surface RT and Surface Pro.

If Microsoft wants the second-generation Surface to fare better, it should move down the size spectrum and abandon its absurd 16:9 aspect ratio that makes its tablet awkward and unwieldy in portrait usage. Microsoft should also unify Surface around the Intel chips, particularly since this year's Haswell chips will remove any reason for Windows RT to still exist.

It's been a frustrating path for Microsoft investors, who've watched the company fail to capitalize on the incredible growth in mobile over the past decade. However, with the release of its own tablet, along with the widely anticipated Windows 8 operating system, the company is looking to make a splash in this booming market. In a new premium report on Microsoft, a Motley Fool analyst explains that while the opportunity is huge, so are the challenges.
